The use of PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is growing increasingly popular in the world of aesthetic enhancements. PRP can be used for both Mircro-Needling or hair enhancement procedures. Below we review how it is commonly used in each application.
Micro-Needling with PRP is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that provides a quick recovery time. It has been proven effective for the treatment of acne & surgical scars, stretch marks, wrinkles & fine lines, hyperpigmentation, lax skin, sun damage, large pores, and uneven skin texture. The treatment involves the use of two procedures, micro-needling and PRP, done consecutively. Micro-Needling is completed first, with the use of a handheld automatic tool. Small channels are created in the skin’s surface as the micro-needles of the tool pass over the skin. Healing of the channels begins almost immediately, and consists of collagen and elastin production. This is where the second step, PRP, comes in.
PRP is produced in human blood naturally. A blood sample is taken from the patient, and using a centrifuge, the blood is separated from the PRP. Highly concentrated amounts of natural growth factors are found in PRP. Applying a patients PRP directly to the treated skin stimulates the natural healing process & creation of collagen. After treatment, your skin may appear a soft shade of pink, and be slightly tender to the touch (much like with a sunburn). In 24-72 hours, your skin should reach complete recovery – though you may see increased results over the next 4-8 weeks as your natural collagen production continues.
The use of PRP for hair enhancement is derived from the growth factors the white blood cells and platelets in plasma contain. These growth factors help stimulate the activity of the hair follicles and promote new hair growth. For this treatment, the patient’s plasma is again separated from their blood using a centrifuge. The plasma, rich in platelets, is then injected directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. The injections occur at intervals across the scalp approximately 1/2 inch apart, and average treatment time is right around 30 minutes. Aside from going a day (or two) without your typical hair maintenance (coloring, processing, blow-drying, etc.), there isn’t much down-time associated with this treatment. A warm shower is suggested after treatment to increase blood flow and circulation throughout the scalp. If any discomfort or bruising occurs, Tylenol is a safe over the counter option for remedy.
